02. How Much Does a Professional Editorial Photoshoot Cost in the UK?
Let's talk about money.
Because as exciting as creative photography sounds, eventually somebody is going to ask the question everyone is thinking:
“Okay, but how much?”
The slightly annoying answer is that there isn't one universal price for an editorial photoshoot in the UK. Editorial photography can mean very different things depending on who is involved, what is being created and how large the production is.
There is a huge difference between one person booking a photographer for a carefully planned two-hour creative shoot and a fashion brand commissioning an entire production involving multiple models, a stylist, hair and makeup, assistants, studio hire, set design, production crew, extensive retouching and commercial licensing.
Both can be described as editorial photography.
They are just very different productions.
That is why prices can vary so dramatically. Current UK photography pricing shows smaller fashion and portfolio sessions sitting in the hundreds of pounds, while larger editorial and commercial productions can move into much higher figures once additional crew, production, studio and licensing costs are involved. There isn't really one “correct” editorial photography price because the brief determines the production.
And this is important when comparing photographers.
Don't just look at the headline price.
Look at what the price actually includes.
How long is the shoot? How much planning happens beforehand? Is creative direction included? Is a moodboard created? Is the location arranged? Are you receiving a handful of selected photographs or your full curated gallery? Are the photographs professionally edited? What happens after the shoot? What usage rights do you have?
Because two photographers can both advertise an editorial session for £200 and offer completely different experiences.
One might give you five final photographs…
Another might give you an entire professionally curated gallery…
One might expect you to organise everything yourself…
Another might work with you from the initial idea, through the planning and right up to the final delivery…
That difference matters.
At Nefertiti Spades, the intention is to make editorial photography feel accessible without removing the professional experience that makes it valuable. An editorial session can be carefully planned, creatively directed and professionally photographed without turning into a huge production that requires a five-figure budget. That is especially important because I don't only see editorial photography as something for established fashion brands.
I see it as something that can genuinely benefit individuals too.
An aspiring model might need new portfolio images. A fashion student might need to document their work professionally. A creative might want to build a body of work around a concept. A content creator might want imagery that feels more distinctive. Someone with no modelling experience whatsoever might simply want to experience what it feels like to create something completely different from their everyday photographs.
And that is where I think the conversation about price becomes much more interesting.
You aren't simply paying for somebody to take photographs. You're paying for the creative thinking, preparation, photography, editing and experience that allows those photographs to exist in the first place. That is why I would always encourage someone to ask, “What am I actually receiving?” rather than simply asking, “Who is the cheapest?”
And sometimes, once you understand what is involved, you realise that a professionally planned editorial shoot is much more achievable than you originally thought.
Which brings us to another misconception I hear all the time. You might think editorial photography sounds exciting, but perhaps you're still thinking:
“Lovely. But surely that's for models?” Nope.
